Couples - 2025

“Couples,” begun in 2025, is a series of paintings centered on the charged space between two figures. Set against fields of abstract color and shifting shapes, the pairs hold hands, lean toward one another, or connect through a shared gesture. The works are informed by ideas of support and partnership. Their connection is both physical and structural, acting as an anchor within expanses of improvisational mark making.

A recurring motif is the archway, which functions as a framing device and a stage. It suggests shelter, passage, and thresholds, an in-between space where relationship becomes visible. Stylized landscape elements, such as roads or paths, often extend from the figures, implying movement and continuity beyond the picture plane. These compositional cues create a quiet narrative tension: the figures are at once grounded and on the verge of departure.
